Physical Chemistry, how many degrees of freedom in this system?
Filed Under Physical Chemistry | 1 Comment
saturated solution of Na2SO4 with excess of the solid is present in equilibrium with its vapor in a closed vessel. Calculate the number of degrees of freedom of the system. Also, identify the independent variables.
I’ve asked my friends and we all got different answers. It’s a question we took off the net to help us study for the upcoming final.

What is the importance of organic chemistry to being a Pharmacist?
Filed Under Organic Chemistry | 1 Comment
Hi, I’m a student currently in the pharmacological chemistry major. I’m taking upper division Organic chemistry classes right now but I have an extremely bad professor. I’m afraid that he’ll leave out important information. I am just wondering how important is ochem is to the profession itself, and pharm degree exams. I know there’s a lot more other chemistry such as physical chemistry and biochem in this major, but how important is ochem related to those.

My question is 250 g of water at 20 C is cooled to -10 C . What is the volume change? I have the density of water at 20 C, p=.9982 g/cm^3 and at 0 C, p=.915 g/cm^3, but not for -10 C. I know how get the volume using density but how do I find out volume for -10 C?

what should I focus my studies on when preparing for intro to organic chemistry?
Filed Under Organic Chemistry | 1 Comment
I will be taking “introduction to organic chemistry” in two weeks. I hear that it is a very hard class and would like to read through some of the chapters to prepare. Specifically what aspect of organic chemistry should I focus on most? What will most likely help me to succeed in this class? Tips?
help is appreciated!

I had some friends told me to better major in microbiology because it covers biochemistry(overlap). While Biochemistry is just biochemistry. Yet friends told me that a major in either is great. So What is the difference between the two majors?

Ok, basically I have a choice between a BA in chemistry and a BA in biology. I need to stress that I will /not/ use the degree regardless as I plan to apply to medical school and they could care less what your degree is in. That being said, I like both biology and chemistry, yet I am hesitant to commit to chemistry since at UC Davis (where I plan to transfer), and im sure elsewhere, you’re required to take a full year of physical chem as part of the degree requirements. I hear that it is obviously very heavy in physics and is extremely hard.
So my question is to those who are chemist majors who preferably have already taken one or more physical chem classes: Is it really that bad or not? As much description of pchem as you want will be much appreciated, however, keep in mind that I’m just finishing gen chem 1 so I may not understand any terms you use that are specific to organic or physical chem. Thanks!
