can anyone tell me whats in organic chemistry. I heard that there is lots of remembering and lots of stuff but does anyone know what is it about. I am done with general chemistry.

All molecules in organic chemistry have at least one Carbon atom. Tthea molecules are related to living organisms.

    Organic Chemistry (ugh)

The study of molecules with CH- atoms in their structure and the special properties contained therein. Such as those for covalent bonds and in hydrogen bonding.

A huge portion of organic chem is devoted to the structure and nomenclature to describe an organic compound. It can be quite complicated and requires the ability to think in 3 dimensions!

You will learn about the reactions of hydrocarbons and how it relates to their unique “functional groups.”

Your labs will involve means to determine an unknown substance’s structure by using chromatography, spectroscopy, & spectrometry.

Hydrocarbon chemistry is the study of organic compounds (compounds based on carbon). This does not include carbonates or oxides of carbon.
The hydrocarbons are compounds of carbon and hydrogen and, there are many hundreds of compounds of this type which are derived from crude oil, coal and natural gas.
Organic compounds have Co-valent Bonds. A carbon atom has four co-valent bonds to complete its valence shell. Hydrogen has a single bond.
The formation of bonds between carbon atoms and between carbon and hydrogen atoms gives rise to ‘Chains’ of atoms and molecules. The chains can be ‘Open’ (Straight or Branch chain), or ‘Closed’ (Ring formation).
Hydrocarbons are classified according to the way the carbon atoms are bonded together and the number of hydrogen atoms attached to them. From the carbon chain formation, we have two main classes of hydrocarbons: -

    Aliphatic and Cyclic Compounds
In Aliphatic compounds, the atoms are arranged in the chain to give an ‘Open’ structure. The open chain can be ‘Straight’ or ‘Branched’.
Cyclic compounds form a ‘Closed’ chain or ‘Ring’ structure.

The hydrocarbon molecules consist of Carbon and Hydrogen atoms. When a molecule is ‘Saturated’ it can take no more hydrogen atoms. An ‘Unsaturated’ molecule is highly reactive because it has ‘room’ for more hydrogen atoms or other elements. The hydrocarbons are classified further into groups as follows: -
    Aliphatic: 1. Alkanes, 2. Alkenes, 3. Alkynes, 4. Alkadienes
    Cyclic: 1. Cyclo-alkanes, 2. Cyclo- alkenes, 3. Cyclo-dienes, 4. Aromatics

I’m a 4th Year Uni student doing chemistry! Organic chemistry for me is the most fun and probably the easiest. It’s all about carbon bonds! So you learn all the different types of reactions, from Grignard to Diels Alder. You learn how the rxn goes, what starting products to use and even how to do it in reverse!
But starting off is fun. You learn all the different functional groups (few molecules that gives a compound its special features!), e.g alcohol, aldehyde, ketone, phenol. If you work hard you will love organic chemistry. It’s the most fun and less maths orientated!
    Good luck in it!

Organic chemistry is a specific discipline within chemistry which involves the scientific study of the structure, properties, composition, reactions, and preparation (by synthesis or by other means) of chemical compounds consisting primarily of carbon and hydrogen, which may contain any number of other elements, including nitrogen, oxygen, halogens as well as phosphorus, silicon and sulfur

Organic chemistry is to understand not to remember. It is like a painting for artist. You start painting, ultimately you will get a nice painting. You don’t have to remember.
Every subject is nice subject but organic chemistry is nicest.
